So, I have a lot of thoughts on this the remake of this game. A lot of very strong feelings about it.
Now, before I really get into anything, I don't like to go into a game expecting to hate it. That's unfair to the developers and unfair to myself, because at that point I'm just wasting my own time
However, with that being said, I really didn't expect this game to be something I gave a shit about. Most of the current Capcom video game remakes nowadays just aren't very interesting to me
Capcom's M.O. for these remakes really does just seem to be "let's dumb this game down for the average consumer" and it clearly works, I mean, just look at these review scores:
I think these are absolutely ridiculous. Perfect 10/10 masterpiece? Really??
Now, I'm not just sitting here and crying and pissing over the fact this game got a 10. I'm not so hung up on review scores that the thought of it having a 10 is making me cry myself to sleep every night, because trust me I have much more important things to cry about. I do think it's indicative of a problem with the game industry, however!
My explanation for this is simple: The average consumer seems to want every video game to feel the exact same. That sounds like a ridiculous thing to say out loud, but really, think about it.
It's why every single 3D action game coming out now is a soulslike, with light rpg systems and Simon Says enemy design. It's insane just how many games play that way. Even if they lack one or more of those 3 qualities I think you'd be hard pressed to find a 3D action game that's come around in recent years that doesn't play that way unless it's a 3rd or 1st person shooter
and that's what they did. Turned this game into a generic 3rd person shooter. It's so sad
This game had a very particular control style which doesn't get used in basically any other game I can think of besides God Hand (which is also a Capcom game!!!) and that is, tank controls with a fixed third person camera. Resident Evil 4 is very reliant on this camera system for its challenge to work like it's supposed to. It's supposed to be difficult to see around you so you don't immediately see when Ashley is going to get grabbed. It's supposed to increase the tension when you hear enemies coming and can't tell exactly how far away they are. And most importantly (in my opinion) the camera system allows for you to turn Resident Evil 4 into what almost feels like a beat em up game!
That's a key aspect of what makes that game as enjoyable as it is. The enemies have a large amount of hitstun, and reliable ways to inflict said hitstun, so you can go out of your way to go for melee attacks or kill with the knife. Hell, if you get good enough, you can kill an enemy using nothing but your knife by either taking its knees out or slashing it's face, kicking them, and then stabbing the shit out of them when they're on the ground!
